Southern Nazarene University - Tulsa Campus Program Planning Worksheet Guide

The degree requirements for the Bachelor of Science in either Organizational Leadership, or Family Studies and Gerontology  are divided into three categories: 1) 45 credit hours of General Education 2) 43 credit hours of Electives 3) 36 credit hours of Major coursework. The degree requires a minimum of 124 credit hours.

I.        General Education Category

These requirements are satisfied by traditional courses CLEP credit, or possible credit through the student’s portfolio. Requirements must be met in the following 4 Areas:

For Areas 1 through 4 the following rules apply:

    1. A minimum of three sub-categories must be used within each division.
    2. The minimum hour requirement in each division must be met.
    3. The maximum hour requirement must not be exceeded.
    4. There must be a total of 45 semester hours met from these divisions.

Area 1. Language, Literature and Communication: 12-15 semester hours

      1. English Composition (3 hours mandatory)
      2. Literature (any Literature course except Composition and Literature)
      3. Communication (any Speech course)
      4. Modern Languages (French, Spanish, German, etc.; does not include Sign Language)
      5. Humanities (General Humanities, Western Civilization, etc.)

Area 2. Social and Behavioral Sciences: 9-12 Semester hours

      1. Psychology (any Psychology course)
      2. Sociology (any Sociology course)
      3. History (any History course)
      4. Political Science (Intro. to Pol. Sci., Am. Gov’t., State and Local Gov’t., etc.)

Area 3. Natural Sciences: 9-12 semester hours

      1. Mathematics (Algebra, Trigonometry, Calculus, etc.)
      2. Physical Science (Intro. to Physical Science, Physics, Chemistry, etc.)
      3. Life Science (Biology, Zoology, Botany, Anatomy & Physiology, etc.)
      4. Earth Science (Geology, Astronomy, etc.)
      5. Computer Science (any Computer Science course)

 

Area 4. Fine Arts, Philosophy and Religion: 9-12 semester hours

      1. Art Appreciation (Art in Life, Survey of Art, Art History, Art Appreciation, etc.)
      2. Music Appreciation (Music in Life, Survey of Music, Music History, Music Appreciation, etc.)
      3. Philosophy (any Philosophy course)
      4. Religion (Biblical Literature, Theology, Christian Education, Christian Thought, etc.)
      5. Humanities (General Humanities, Western Civilization, etc.)
      6. General Fine Arts

II.       Elective Category

There is a requirement of at least 43 credit hours to satisfy the elective category. These are met by any traditional courses from any discipline, CLEP credit, or possible credit through the student’s portfolio.

III.     Major Coursework Category

Requirements are made up of 36 credit hours from your choice of the OL or FSG major.
